    A man has tried to sell a baby in Manchester city centre, police said.

    The incident happened at about 14:30 BST in Barton Arcade when a man with a three-month-old girl in a pram approached a member of the public.

    A man, aged 28, has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect. Police said the child is safe and well.

    Det Insp Liam Boden said: «We will be questioning him in relation to the incident as we try to establish the full circumstances.»

    International Aid volunteer Alan Henning, who was killed by Islamic State extremists, is to be given a posthumous degree by the University of Salford.

    The taxi driver, 47, was delivering aid to Syria in December 2013 when he was kidnapped and then held hostage.

    A video purporting to show Mr Henning being beheaded was posted on the internet in October 2014.

    In a ceremony later, his two children will collect his honorary doctorate.

    Mr Henning, from Eccles, was on his fourth mission providing humanitarian relief to the country when he was captured within minutes of arriving.
    ‘Extremely proud’

    He had gone there to drive an ambulance for Rochdale Aid 4 Syria, a group which raises money on behalf of humanitarian charity Al-Fatiha Global.

    University of Salford Vice Chancellor, Prof Helen Marshall, said: «The values that Alan stood for and embodied in his efforts to help the world’s most vulnerable people, are the values of Salford and of our university.

    «Today we celebrate Alan’s work, he will be remembered with pride by all Salfordians.»

    Labour leadership candidate Andy Burnham has indicated he would not do an interview with the Sun newspaper if he becomes party leader.

    Mr Burnham told the BBC he had not forgiven the paper for its coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

    He said he did not do «special favours» for papers «attacking» him or Labour.

    The Sun has not come out in support of any of the four candidates but has praised Liz Kendall, describing her as «the only prayer [the party] have».

    Asked specifically about the Sun, Mr Burnham told the BBC’s Sunday Politics North West : «I give interviews generally and people can report my words. But I don’t do special favours for newspapers that attack me and attack my party.»

    He remains critical of the paper’s coverage of the Hillsborough tragedy — its reporting prompted a campaign to boycott The Sun on Merseyside. The newspaper has apologised several times for its stories.
    ‘Vested interests’

    Ninety-five Liverpool supporters were killed in a crush of fans at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield on 15 April 1989, where the club was playing an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

    The 96th victim was in a coma for three years and died in 1992.

    During his interview with the BBC, Mr Burnham also said that while he admired former Prime Minister Tony Blair, he believed he got too close to the concerns of business and the media.

    He said: «I was a member of his government and I in the end, you’ll remember, went to Anfield in 2009 and we saw what happened when a Labour city expressed its feelings that a Labour government that hadn’t been listening to it.

    «And why? Because I saw Tony at times get too close to vested interests in business and the media.

    «So close that his government couldn’t hear a whole city crying injustice. Now that would never happen under my leadership.»

    Shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt, who had been a possible leadership contender at one stage, told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show he would not be taking a similar stand against the Sun.

    A lot of Sun readers were Labour voters, he said. «We need to reach out to those votes — we need as many friends as possible.»

    A man has been charged with rape after two mothers who were looking after their children were attacked in their homes.

    A 31-year-old Failsworth man has been charged with rape, attempted rape, trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence and assault.

    A woman was asleep next to her son in Newton Heath at 04:40 on Friday when a man attempted to rape her, police said.

    A second mother was attacked next to her baby in Failsworth at 07:00.

    She was treated in hospital for serious injuries. Her baby suffered no injuries.

    The accused man is due to appear before Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court on Monday.

    Bastian Schweinsteiger: Man Utd bound star says Bayern farewell

    Bastian Schweinsteiger has thanked Bayern Munich fans as he has a medical on Sunday before his proposed move to Manchester United.

    The 30-year-old Germany midfielder is believed to have told Bayern he did not want to extend his contract, which runs until 2016.

    United announced in a club statement on Saturday
    that they had reached an agreement to sign him.

    «I hope you understand my decision,» Schweinsteiger told fans on Twitter.

    The World-Cup winner said he was moving to United to «gain experience at a new club».

    A man has been charged with rape after a woman was attacked in a park in Manchester.

    The 25-year-old woman was attacked as she walked on a footpath in Wythenshawe Park at about 04:00 BST on 5 July. Extra police patrols were carried out in the aftermath.

    Daniel McBurney, 30, from Sale, has been charged with rape and robbery, Greater Manchester Police said.

    He will appear before Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court later.

    A public health agreement has been signed as part of the devolution of health and social care in Greater Manchester.

    It was announced in February the area would become the first English region to get full control of its annual budget, which is £6bn.

    The memorandum of understanding sets out priorities focussing on «prevention and early intervention».

    They include combining the work of emergency services and health checks.

    According to the agreement, there will be one team to oversee health and social care, currently run by the NHS and Greater Manchester’s 10 councils.

    The deal was signed by leaders from Public Health England, the NHS and local authorities at the first meeting of Greater Manchester’s new System Prevention and Early Intervention Board.
    ‘Less demand’

    Councillor Cliff Morris, who leads health for Greater Manchester Combined Authority, said: «We are now able to have local control over local needs while working with our national colleagues in public health and NHS England.»

    Steven Pleasant, regional chief executive for public health, said: «We know that if we can help people to stay well there will ultimately be less demand on health services.

    «This then keeps the health service sustainable while keeping people in work and gaining skills for the region.»

    The region’s authorities currently manage £4.7bn health and social care allocation after the first phase of the devolution transfer.

    The deal means full power and the remaining £1.3bn will be devolved by April 2016.

    A missing 14-year-old girl is thought to be in Spain with a 37-year-old man suspected of her abduction.

    Camilia Lupu, originally from Romania but living in Oldham, was reported missing on 26 June.

    Camilia is believed to be travelling with Romanian national Alin Coman. She is white and about 4ft 7in (1.4m) tall, slim, with dark hair and brown eyes.

    Her parents have urged her to come home and said the last two weeks had been «very difficult».

    Speaking at a press conference arranged by Greater Manchester Police, her father Gheorghe Lupu said: «I want from all my heart for my child to come back.

    «We love her very much. I only want her to come back home.»

    Two mothers who were looking after their children have been subjected to sex attacks by the same man in their Greater Manchester homes, police said.

    The man was disturbed as he attempted to rape the first woman while she slept alongside her young son at her Newton Heath home at about 04:40 BST.

    The man then raped and attacked another mother who was with her baby at her Failsworth home at 07:00.

    A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with both attacks.

    The woman who was raped was being treated in hospital for serious injuries. Her baby suffered no injuries.
    ‘Known to victims’

    A police spokeswoman said the man fled the first attack after he was disturbed by the victim’s boyfriend.

    Police believe the man was known to both women.

    Det Insp Chris Flint, from Greater Manchester Police, said: «These are horrific incidents, during which the victims’ children were present.

    «I know people in the community will be upset this type of offence has taken place in their neighbourhood and I would like to reassure them that we have a team of experienced detectives working on the case and we are determined to catch the man responsible.»

    Reid Daley, 13, and a friend touched giant hogweed at Moses Gate Country Park, Farnworth on Saturday while playing.

    Toxic sap from the weed, which grows near canals and rivers, can increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight, often leading to burns.

    Bolton Council said the weed had since been removed from the park.

    Reid and three friends found a patch of the plants and started to play amongst them. He woke up the following day with rashes to his skin and was taken to hospital.

    He said: «They started to blister up as I was in the sunlight.

    «I was in agony, every time I moved or touched something with it it was like someone was poking me with a needle. It just wouldn’t stop.»

    Four teenagers have been charged with arson after a fire at the former Warrington nightclub Mr Smith’s.

    A blaze ripped through the building and destroyed the roof on 14 April.

    Three boys, all aged 17, and a 15-year-old girl have been released on bail and are due to appear at Halton Youth Court on 29 July.

    No further action will take place against two boys and a girl, all aged 17, who were also arrested in April, Cheshire Police said.

    At its height, 70 firefighters tackled the fire at the premises on Wilson Patten Street.

    No-one was injured in the blaze at the former nightclub, which closed in 2010.

    Mr Smith’s was a regular setting for the ITV Granada show The Hit Man and Her, which was presented by Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachan between 1988 and 1992.
